How to Pack for an Overnight Trip (Without Losing Your Mind)
Our little family loves a good roadtrip. Whether it’s a beachy town on the coast or a cosy cabin up in the mountains, we love sneaking away from Sydney to unplug—even if it’s just for a night. Over the years, we’ve nailed the art of packing light but right.
Here’s our no-fuss guide to overnight packing.
Step 1: Start with a Game Plan (aka a checklist)
Forget last-minute chaos. A simple packing checklist saves you from forgetting toothpaste or, worse, clean undies. Write it down or keep a running note on your phone. Either way, future you will be grateful.
Stick to multitaskers: the blazer that works for dinner and the flight, the tote that fits your laptop and your gym gear. Think less stuff, more function.
Pro tip: A capsule wardrobe is your best friend. Neutral tones, minimal pieces, max versatility. Yes, we mean our cloud hoodies. Check them out 👀
Step 2: Your Bag = Your Base
Let’s talk totes. A good one carries everything without looking like you’ve packed your entire life. Choose a tote bag that’s durable, stylish, and has a few secure pockets (because digging for your AirPods at security is a bad time).
Look for something you won’t be embarrassed to throw on the floor at a café—but also won’t cry over if it gets a scuff or two. Bonus points if it doubles as your work bag Monday morning.
As for caps? Keep the sun out of your eyes and the bad hair days in check. A cap with a bit of character (and comfort) can seriously lift a travel outfit.
Step 3: Clothes That Pull Their Weight
If it doesn’t go with at least two other things, it stays home. Mix-and-match pieces are key here. Stick to one pair of shoes, wear your bulkiest layer, and resist the urge to “just in case” pack a fifth top.
Check the weather before you go (this isn’t 2004), and keep it simple: layers for changeable forecasts, one statement piece if you're feeling spicy.
Step 4: Toiletries: Travel-Size Everything
Your skincare routine can come with you—just downsize it. Travel-sized toiletries = more room in your tote and less time spent decanting your shampoo at 1 a.m.
Keep a ready-to-go toiletries kit. You’ll thank yourself next time you get a last-minute invite or Friday flight.
Contain your liquids. Zip-locks or leak-proof pouches = no tragic shampoo explosions.
Step 5: Tech + Work Gear (Keep It Tight)
Laptops, chargers, cables... the essentials. Keep them all in one compact tech pouch so you’re not unraveling a cord spaghetti situation mid-transit.
Don’t overpack the gadgets. One device usually does the job. And yes—charge everything before you leave.
Step 6: Final Bits (Snacks Optional, But Advised)
-
Travel wallet: For your passport, ID, tickets, and that one loyalty card you’re inexplicably attached to.
-
Refillable water bottle + a snack: Because being dehydrated and hangry is no one’s vibe.
-
Foldable tote: In case you pick up a souvenir or two. (Or snacks. Again, no judgment.)
